1066

Read on to find out about Class 4's Spring 2 topic: 1066. 19.2.24 - Come to school dressed in Medieval fancy dress for our enrichment day.

It’s probably the most famous date in English history... we’re travelling back to 1066!

King Edward is dying, so we’ll write job applications for the role of King. We’ll research the events of 1066 using books and online information. What was the Battle of Hastings, and how did it change our country? We’ll discover what life was like for Norman people and dress up as Normans for the day. We’ll be history detectives, looking closely at the Bayeux Tapestry and sketching parts of it. We’ll use different source materials to research Norman castles and online maps to locate them. In English, we’ll write emotive poems about war and get into character to write diary entries. We’ll make a Domesday Book all about our class.

At the end of the ILP, we’ll think about what the Normans did for us and share our learning with you. We’ll finish by embroidering a panel about ourselves.

Help your child prepare for their project
1066 was a year of great change for Britain. Why not visit a castle or fort together to find out who lived there and when it was built? You could also make a life-sized soldier! Take it in turns to draw around each other’s bodies on large pieces of paper and use images of Norman or Anglo-Saxon soldiers to inspire your design. Alternatively, you could work together to write a diary entry as a king who is about to go into battle. How would you feel?
